History[]

We first meet young Scot Ian McLeod, come to stay with his uncle Stafford Armitage, a drunken tea plantation owner, and Sarah Raworth sets her sights on him.

Armitage later gives Ian a tour of the plantation, meeting his neighbour Ramu Sood, to whom Armitage adopts a racist attitude but to whom he apparently owes money.

Ranu asks Ian to intervene with his uncle for money Armitage owes him.

Armitage dies and Ranu offers Ian work as his plantation manager to the disgust of the racist Cynthia Coffin. Ian's goal is like Sooni Dalal's and Aafrin Dalal's, India's Independence.

In 1935 he proposes to Sooni.
